Wyden Statement on Trump Health Care Order

Finance Ranking Member Touts Bill to Help Consumers Make Sense of Health Care Prices

Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released a statement following an executive order from the president directing his administration to create new policies on health care price transparency.

“High health care prices are straining family budgets – that’s why I have a bill to let people find out what they will have to pay before they go to the doctor,” Wyden said. “Transparency is an important first step, but this initiative cannot become a license for industry to sustain the high cost status quo. Real steps must be taken to lower prices for health care on everything from drug prices to medical procedures.”

Wyden has pushed for increased health care price transparency in recent months, including the introduction of a bill, called the “Health Care Price Check Act of 2019.” Wyden’s bill requires Medicare and insurance companies to make available an online tool and a toll free number for beneficiaries to inquire about the cost, for that specific consumer, of any service, procedure or product, including prescription drugs.
