Hatch Announces Senate Finance Committee Republicans to Submit Recommendations to Joint Deficit Reduction Committee

WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, announced today that Committee Republicans would produce a series of recommendations to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction.  Hatch made this decision after consulting with Republican members of the Committee today.

“Today, Finance Committee Republicans agreed that putting real deficit reduction ideas on the table is something that we should pursue,” said Hatch.  “The Deficit Reduction Committee is ultimately charged with finding over a trillion dollars in savings, but we still have the ability to provide constructive solutions and put forward creative ideas.  That’s exactly what we’ll do by carefully scrutinizing every program and agency that falls under the Finance Committee’s jurisdiction to bring our over $14.5 trillion debt under control.”

Finance Committee Republicans agreed that they would finalize and submit those recommendations by October 14, 2011.

Under the Budget Control Act of 2011 congressional committees of jurisdiction can submit recommendations.  The Finance Committee has jurisdiction over more than 50 percent of the nation’s budget, including Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, welfare, trade and all tax policy.
