Grassley Hires New Tax Counsel for Finance Committee Staff

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member of the Committee on Finance, has hired a new tax counsel for his committee staff. Jim Lyons will handle a portfolio of issues including capital cost recovery, accounting rules, and research and development.

“I’m glad to have someone with Jim’s experience on my staff,” Grassley said. “He’s workedon tax issues from Capitol Hill and the Justice Department and learned the issues inside and out. It’s good to welcome him back to the legislative branch, where he can advise on effective tax policy.”

Lyons comes to Grassley’s staff from the Department of Justice, Tax Division, inWashington, D.C., where he served as a trial attorney for one of the civil trial sections, managinga large docket of tax cases in federal district and bankruptcy courts on behalf of the IRS. Before the Justice Department, Lyons worked for the House Ways and Means Committeeas a tax counsel on the Republican staff. He worked primarily on the American Jobs Creation Actof 2004.

Lyons earned his law degree from the University of Texas. He studied toward an LL.M intaxation at New York University while working full-time at a law firm and earned his undergraduatedegree from James Madison University. He is a native of Springfield, Va.
