Baucus Responds to President Bush’s Speech on Social Security

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) Immediately following President Bush’s speech on Social Security,U.S. Senator Max Baucus issued the following statement:

“It was good to hear more details of the President’s plan. I am saddened however to hearthat privatizing Social Security is still a focus. Congress cannot and will not support a risky newscheme that would add trillions of dollars to the debt and mean huge benefit cuts for Americans. Also, the plan that was highlighted tonight would mean additional cuts for Americans andthat’s just not right. Once privatization is off the table, I look forward to working together withthe Administration to strengthen Social Security for generations to come.”

Baucus is the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, which ha sjurisdiction over the Social Security program.
