Baucus Congratulates Schwab as next USTR

Washington, DC --- U.S. Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, today applauded the Senate vote to approve the nomination of Ambassador Susan Schwab to become the next United States Trade Representative (USTR). Senator Baucus issued the following statement:

“I congratulate Ambassador Susan Schwab on her confirmation today. Susan is tenacious, energetic, and one of the brightest minds in the world of international trade. With almost three decades of experience and considerable negotiating successes under her belt, she is an outstanding choice to become United States Trade Representative.”

“Her confirmation comes at a time when the United States is in one of the most challenging periods in trade policy that I can remember – both with our trading partners and domestically. The WTO Doha Round is foundering, our trade deficit with China is growing rapidly, and we are negotiating the largest free trade agreements in over a decade. At the same time, overall support for trade in America has waned considerably.”

“Ambassador Schwab will need all of her skill, experience, and guts to succeed in the face of these challenges. I look forward to working with her in addressing these difficult issues.”
