Wyden Statement on Supreme Court Ruling to Restrict Emergency Room Care for Women
Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued a statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on a case to determine whether hospitals that participate in Medicare are required to provide abortions to those entering an emergency room in need of health care to stabilize an emergency medical condition under federal law governed by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA):
“With today’s narrow ruling, the Supreme Court decided to keep women and medical professionals in a continued state of fear and uncertainty,” Wyden said. “By opting not to settle this issue once and for all, the Supreme Court has kept the door open to forcing doctors and hospitals to consider other factors, like draconian state abortion bans made possible by the overturning of Roe v Wade, instead of focusing on the health and safety of their patient in an emergency situation. Forcing doctors to make such decisions is dangerous and contrary to the foundations of the American medical system and will harm Americans.”
