Wyden Statement on Senseless Trump Tariffs on Products from Canada, Mexico and China
Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement after Trump unilaterally imposed massive tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico and China. These tariffs could cost average families up to $2,000 a year in higher prices:
“Donald Trump is waging economic terrorism against American families. Trump promised to lower prices. Instead, he is jacking up the costs of groceries, gas, power and electronics. The U.S. auto industry will be devastated. American farmers and exporters are already seeing their markets evaporate and jobs destroyed as a result of Trump’s senseless trade war. Republicans have the power to bring this price-hiking spree to a halt, but I have no confidence they’ll put their constituents ahead of Trump.”
Background: Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on products imported from Canada and Mexico beginning today, and he raised additional tariffs on goods from China to 20 percent. Together, the tariffs will raise prices on roughly 45 percent of goods imported into the United States. An additional 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports is scheduled to go into effect on March 12, leading to 50 percent additional tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, America’s largest supplier.
