Wyden Statement on HHS Leadership Announcement

WASHINGTON – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., released the following statement on the departure of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius:

“As a result of Kathleen’s dedication to improving health care in America over the last five years, health care cost  growth is slowing and millions of Americans have gained economic security that comes with health insurance coverage that many never had. Implementing historic reforms takes chutzpah. Because of her efforts, nearly nine million seniors have saved close to $10 billion in reduced prescription drug costs; quality of care has improved; and, health care in American is no longer for just the healthy and the wealthy. Her unwavering leadership and commitment will benefit millions of Americans for generations to come.

Sylvia Mathews Burwell brings a wealth of experience from the public and private sectors. She has already brought her management skills to bear on reducing the deficit. Developing and defending the administration's budget has given her ample exposure to health care issues, and she makes an excellent choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.”
