Wyden: New Organics Agreement Will Re-Open Korean Market to U.S. Products

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Trade Representative and U.S. Department of Agriculture signed an agreement with Korea that will allow processed food products certified to U.S. organic standards to be sold in Korea as organic without having to go through a separate certification process. The agreement will restore access for U.S. organic processed food  producers to a growing Korean market by removing an expensive and time-consuming barrier that, since January, has made it all but impossible for U.S. companies to sell processed food products labeled as organic in Korea.

"Oregon food products that earned an organic certification in the United States don’t suddenly become less organic when they’re sold overseas,” said Senator Wyden. "Oregon businesses that put in the time and effort to meet U.S. standards deserve to be recognized as organic wherever their products are sold. This agreement will eliminate unnecessary restrictions that for too long have prevented U.S. organics exporters from using the organic label in Korea."
