Wyden Calls on Crapo to Pause Committee Consideration of Social Security Nomination Until Further Investigation of Bisignano Lies
Letter to Finance Chairman Outlines How Nominee to Lead Social Security Mislead Committee Staff and Members on Multiple Occasions About His Knowledge and Involvement With DOGE
Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today urged the chairman of the Committee to pause consideration of the nominee to lead the Social Security Administration (SSA) after a statement from a whistleblower at the agency indicated he lied about his involvement in agency decisions related to DOGE.
“I write to urge you to immediately pause the Senate Finance Committee’s consideration of Frank Bisignano to be Commissioner of Social Security until we fully investigate a whistleblower statement from a former senior Social Security employee that directly contradicts certain representations made by Mr. Bisignano,” Wyden wrote. “The details contained in the statement suggest that Mr. Bisignano lied during the Committee’s bipartisan vetting process, lied to me in my office, and lied to the American people at his confirmation hearing about his involvement in key operational, management, and personnel decisions at the Social Security Administration.”
The Finance Committee held a nomination hearing on Tuesday, March 25, to consider Bisignano’s nomination to lead Social Security. At the hearing, Wyden asked Bisignano to verify allegations that he has been personally involved in decisions related to Social Security personnel, as Elon Musk’s DOGE has caused chaos, curtailed phone-based customer service, and opened up concerns about the privacy of Americans’ private personal information. The nominee doubled down that he had not had those conversations, which means he may have lied to Congress.
“Refusing to investigate allegations of this magnitude would open a dark chapter in the Finance Committee’s history and surrender its ability to hold truth to power,” the letter continued. “The Committee must do its job and investigate these claims.”
