POTUS: “Our Massive Tax Cuts Provide Tremendous Relief for the Middle Class and Small Business”

Tax Reform, Individual Mandate Tax Repeal Take Center Stage at President’s State of the Union

During President Trump’s first year in office, he has overseen the biggest tax rewrite in more than 30 years and the effective repeal of the burdensome individual mandate tax—the heart of Obamacare. He highlighted these successes in last night’s State of the Union address:

“Our massive tax cuts provide tremendous relief for the middle class and small business…In April, this will be the last time you will ever file under the old and very broken system, and millions of Americans will have more take-home pay starting next month – a lot more. We eliminated an especially cruel tax that fell mostly on Americans making less than $50,000 a year, forcing them to pay tremendous penalties simply because they couldn't afford government-ordered health plans. We repealed the core of the disastrous Obamacare. The individual mandate is now gone.”

Senate Finance Committee Members took note of these historic achievements, praising these efforts:

Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah):

“Tonight, the president reaffirmed his commitment to advancing smart, pro-growth policies that will further lift our great nation and increase opportunities for all Americans. With the largest rewrite of the U.S. tax code in more than 30 years on the books, America is now a more inviting place to do business, take home pay is increasing, and more families can better save for their future. Now is the time to build on this success.”

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa):

“Once-in-a-generation tax reform is already improving the lives of millions of hardworking Americans, from increased wages and take-home pay to a hiring and investment spree that is creating new jobs and revitalizing parts of the country that many discounted only a few years ago.”

U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho)

“This evening, the President outlined an optimistic and ambitious agenda.  It will build on the momentum of the tax reform measure passed by Congress in December, which is already providing relief for all taxpayers, with the greatest relief going to those in the lower and middle-income tax brackets.  Since the passage of tax reform, millions of workers have already received tax cuts and pay bonuses – including many Idahoans.”

U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.)

“In just one year, our nation has undergone profound change. The Republican Congress and the Trump Administration have lifted the regulatory and tax burdens of individuals and businesses. Our economy is growing, companies are hiring, and Kansas families are finding more money in their pocketbooks.”

U.S. Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.)

“In the last year, President Trump and Congress have achieved a number of impressive accomplishments, including historic tax cuts and an unprecedented effort to end unnecessary and burdensome regulations. Our efforts have helped create more jobs, spurred the economy after years of slow growth and improved the lives of folks across the country.”

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas)

“In December, Congress and the President acted to pass historic tax reform legislation, and many people will start seeing larger paychecks soon. But there’s more good news. Companies across America are passing on tax savings to employees, investing and expanding their businesses, and raising employee pay and benefits. We must continue our work to reduce the regulatory burden on small businesses and enact policies that encourage economic growth.”

U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.)

“[W]e strengthened our economy…by passing a comprehensive tax reform package that is already bringing relief to hardworking families. After years of sluggish growth, our economy is finally moving in a strong, positive direction, providing Americans with expanded opportunities.”

U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-S.D.)

“We repealed the burdensome Individual Mandate from Obamacare. And we passed the most sweeping tax reform in more than thirty years, putting more of your hard earned money back in your pockets.”

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.)

“In his first year in office, President Trump has delivered on many promises he made during his campaign, not least of which has been the overhaul of our nation’s tax code. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in December is already benefiting Georgians and families.”

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio)

“Over the last year, we have made progress on a host of important issues. We are already seeing the benefits of the new tax reform law across Ohio with companies giving pay raises and bonuses, expanding benefits and investing more in equipment.”

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.)

“Already, about three million Americans have received bonuses and raises due to tax reform-and this is all before the benefits of new investments are realized. I share the President's view that tax reform will help to grow wages, create new jobs, and spur stronger economic growth.”

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nev.)

“We strengthened our economy by cutting Washington red tape that has been holding back our job creators, and the President signed into law the first major overhaul of our tax code in decades. Tax relief has already had a positive impact on thousands of Nevadans. For example, South Point Hotel Casino & Spa doubled bonuses for 2,300 workers, and the once-stalled Fontainebleau resort in Las Vegas committed to resuming construction on the project, which is expected to create approximately 10,000 new jobs in southern Nevada.”

 U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.)

“[T]he President shared how America is open for business. We were able to pass a once-in-a-generation opportunity – tax reform. As the President mentioned during his speech…this monumental accomplishment has produced amazing results. Over 3 million workers are receiving increased benefits, and 90 percent of Americans will see bigger paychecks. This is great news for single mothers, young entrepreneurs and hardworking Americans who want to simply provide for their families.”

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.)

“With our tax cuts legislation already delivering bigger paychecks and better benefits for workers and families, I look forward to working with the president to expand America’s energy dominance, restore respect for the Constitution throughout the judiciary, and make our military second to none.”
