Mnuchin Brings Experience to Treasury Role

Treasury Nominee ‘More than qualified to lead the Department of Treasury’

Today, the Senate will consider the nomination of Steven Mnuchin to be the next Secretary of the Treasury Department.

In the days following Mr. Mnuchin’s hearing in the Senate Finance Committee, many noted his vast private sector experience and commitment to advancing policies to improve America’s economic and fiscal outlook as the next Treasury Secretary.

Here’s a look at what they are saying:

CHAIRMAN ORRIN HATCH: “His seasoned career as a financial leader equips him with the ability to steer the American economy in the right direction...his commitment to work with Congress to reform our outdated tax code and explore ways to improve our nation’s broken infrastructure system should garner the support of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.” (January 27, 2017)

FAITH SCHWARTZ, FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HOPE NOW ALLIANCE: I dealt with his management team from the top ranks through the day-to-day staff that worked directly with at-risk borrowers. They were very active…and supportive of the many efforts underway to help borrows in default…I believe the record should be clear about the actual record…in delivering solutions (January 13, 2017)

SENATOR RICHARD BURR: “…Mnuchin proceeds today to a full Senate vote on his confirmation. Mnuchin’s credentials are self-evident proof that he is more than qualified to lead the Department of Treasury.” (February 1, 2017)

SENATOR JOHNNY ISAKSON: “The voters spoke in November and wanted change…Mr. Mnuchin will help implement that change with a fresh, new regulatory framework that cuts the bureaucratic red tape that costs our economy trillions of dollars each year.” (February 1, 2017)

MORTGAGE BANKERS ASSOCIATION: “…Mr. Mnuchin’s experience uniquely prepares him to understand and respond to the complex challenges that will face the next Treasury Secretary. We believe he will put his extensive talents to use in ways that will seek to strengthen America’s housing markets and provide regulatory certainty for the real estate finance industry.” (January 17, 2017)

SENATOR MIKE ENZI: “I’m impressed with your private sector experience. There are a lot of things around here that have to change and some of them you are going to be in a position to do and I’ve been really impressed with the knowledge that you’ve already shown with this committee…very impressive.” (January 19, 2017)

SENATOR ROB PORTMAN: “Our economy needs a shot in the arm…During his confirmation hearing, Steve Mnuchin committed to working with me to reform our broken tax code and crack down on unfair imports, and I look forward to working with him to accomplish those goals.” (January 19, 2017)

ECONOMIST JONATHAN WILLIAMS: “Most importantly, though, Mnuchin embodied a combination of free market positions, clearly evident expertise about the business world, and a sunny, can-do attitude about the incoming administration's desire to cut through the thicket of red tape the past eight years of big government policies have produced.” (January 18, 2017)

REP. KEVIN MCCARTHY, HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER: “With decades of experience in banks, financial firms and even movie productions, he has a history of growing returns and achieving financial stability for his clients and shareholders…Steven is a patriot and an independent thinker and America is in great need of such capable leaders.” (January 19, 2017)

REP. JEB HENSARLING, HOUSE FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN:“As we confront America’s economic challenges together, Mr. Mnuchin’s very successful background in investment banking retail banking and business will not only be vital to the incoming administration but to those of us who serve in Congress as well.” (January 19, 2017)
