Grassley Statement on E.U. Court Overturning Improper State-Aid Case

Washington Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today released the following statement regarding the European Union General Court ruling that overturned a 2016 European Commission decision that incorrectly and unfairly targeted Apple, a U.S.-based company.

“I’m encouraged by the ruling from the General Court of the European Union, which annuls the European Commission’s 2016 decision that Ireland provided unlawful state aid to Apple. While the European Commission has denied that it continues to target U.S. companies, the ruling confirms that the European Commission incorrectly applied the law in asserting taxing rights and retroactively assessing billions of dollars of taxes. I hope this ruling will discourage future actions that are inconsistent with international tax standards and adversely harm U.S. businesses,” Grassley said.

“As I have repeatedly stated, these complex international tax issues should be resolved through the multilateral process continuing at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This ruling validates the importance of reaching a consensus on these important global tax issues.”
