Grassley Statement on China Trade Deal

Washington – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today released the following statement regarding the United States’ Phase One trade deal with China.

“This is a very positive development. Easing tensions and lowering tariffs is welcome news. This paves the way for a broader agreement that must address non-tariff barriers and intellectual property issues,” Grassley said. “President Trump should be commended for working toward a strong, enforceable trade deal that will require China to abide by international trade norms and the rule of law. Iowa in particular will benefit from China’s purchasing of agricultural products, especially hog, corn and soybean farmers. But China must know that this gesture of goodwill does not mean the United States will accept anything less than a full and enforceable trade deal. I applaud President Trump, Ambassador Lighthizer and Secretary Mnuchin for their hard work and urge them to remain committed to securing a deal that does away with China’s unfair trade practices.”
