Baucus Sticks up for U.S. Jobs, Voices Strong Support for WTO Case Fighting China’s Unfair Auto Subsidies

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) voiced strong support for the Administration’s actions in filing a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) today against China’s unfair auto export subsidies.  According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the subsidies caused severe distortions in the global auto market and threaten American auto manufacturing jobs.  Chairman Baucus has a long track record of support for using the WTO as a forum to address China’s unfair trade practices, including recent efforts relating to currency undervaluation, rare earth minerals and steel products.  From Chairman Baucus:

“The U.S. cannot stand by and let China skirt international trade rules, especially when American jobs are at stake.  China made a commitment to end these subsidies when it joined the WTO more than a decade ago, so it’s indefensible for it to use this unfair practice.  By lodging this WTO complaint, we’re standing up for workers and manufacturing jobs here in the U.S.  In today’s competitive global economy, it’s critical that we remain aggressive both fighting for American workers and opening new markets to trade.  That is exactly what this complaint against China does.”

The Senate Finance Committeeis led by Chairman Baucus and has jurisdiction over international trade policy.
