Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) today applauded the announcement that free trade agreement negotiations between the United States and the European Union will begin next month. Chairman Baucus pushed for the talks to address the EU’s longstanding barriers to U.S. products, including agricultural goods. From Chairman Baucus:
“A high-standard free trade agreement between the U.S. and EU could be a significant, long-term boost for our economy. With the world more competitive than ever, we need to seize every opportunity we have to spark faster growth and create jobs here at home.
“In order for this agreement to live up to its potential, it needs to address the EU’s longstanding barriers to American agriculture exports. Our trading partners need to drop unscientific barriers to the products American ranchers and farmers produce, which are top-notch and completely safe.”
