Hatch Statement on TPP Trade Negotiations

WASHINGTON – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today issued the following statement after chief trade negotiators concluded talks for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement in Hawaii:

“Trade Promotion Authority sets high bars for America’s trade objectives. While our trade negotiators were able to make significant progress this week, it is important that the United States stood firm to ensure America secures the best deal from our international trading partners. A good deal is better than a fast deal. And, while I remain deeply concerned with some of the positions taken by our counterparts in these talks, I’m confident that with more time and a renewed commitment a strong agreement can be reached that will earn my support, the support of Congress and that of the American people.”

A longtime advocate of breaking down trade barriers, Hatch has championed efforts to enhance America’s global competitiveness and increase access for American farmers, workers and job-creators into international markets. Most recently, Hatch co-authored legislation to renew Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) which was signed into law in June.
